KAYAKING TRIP TO ST. PETERSBURG
St. Petersburg, the splendor of tsars' times and the heartbeat of a modern metropolis.
St. Petersburg is a unique combination of the grandeur of tsars' times and modern big city. St. Petersburg is a metropolis with five million inhabitants, and best of all, it is located right next to Finland.
Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in 1703 and made it the capital of the Russian Empire a dozen years later. First the officials, nobles and merchants of Moscow were reluctant to move to the delta of the Neva River, but soon after that St. Petersburg developed into one of Europe's most beautiful cities. With its architecture that combines classicism and baroque, its palaces and wide boulevards St Petersburg is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The symbols of St Petersburg are its churches that decorate the center. St. Isaac's Cathedral, Church of the Savior on Blood and the Kazan Cathedral, as well as the Imperial Winter Palace and Hermitage Museum, belonging to the same complex designed by an Italian architect. Many well-known Russian writers such as Pushkin, Dostoyevsky and Gogol also lived and worked in St. Petersburg.
But St Petersburg is also a modern metropolis. The vibrant Nevsky Prospekt is St Petersburg's main shopping street and along the way you can find a place in a cozy café or pay a visit to its many ethnic restaurants. Nevsky Prospekt is the highway that never sleeps.
The territory of the city includes 42 islands connected by over 340 bridges. We will paddle through Moika, Kanal Griboyedova and Fontanka, and drop by the Peter and Paul fortress for a picnic on the sandy beach on the other bank of the Neva. We'll see all the major sights of St. Petersburg from a new perspective and at the same time we will stay away from the tourist hustle and bustle of the streets.
Our hotel is situated in a quiet location right on the canal. You will get a single kayak, a paddle, a spray skirt and paddling life jackets for the time of the trip. You will need to take suitable outdoor clothing for sunny and rainy weather, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and footwear suitable for paddling. You are free to also bring your own kayak, and we will help to get it through the border to Russia and back.
